What is Carbon Footprint?
Carbon footprint is the total of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused directly or indirectly by individuals, organizations, products, services, and expressed in CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e). The equivalent is applied to the six most common gases defined in the Kyoto Protocol:
Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
The most common greenhouse gas
Methane (CH₄)
More potent but emitted in smaller quantities
Nitrous oxide (N₂O)
Laughing gas, from agricultural sources
Fluorinated hydrocarbons (HFC)
From refrigeration and air conditioning equipment
Carbon footprint is one of the most important measures of human activity's impact on the environment. It helps measure how much we contribute to global warming.
Organizational (Corporate) Carbon Footprint
Organizational carbon footprint determines the total emissions caused by the organization's activities, including:
- Building energy consumption
- Industrial processes
- Company vehicle fuel consumption
- Product transportation
- Supply chain (Scope 3 emissions)
Companies that can responsibly manage their emissions can increase their reputation and become more attractive to employees and potential customers/investors.
GHG Protocol - The International Standard
The GHG Protocol is a procedural framework (standard) developed for companies and governmental organizations to determine greenhouse gas emissions. It categorizes emissions into 3 main categories:
Scope 1
Direct emissions: electricity, fuel consumption, processing, company vehicles
Scope 2
Indirect emissions: purchased and consumed energy (electricity, heating)
Scope 3
Other indirect emissions: employee commuting, suppliers, waste management
According to the GHG Protocol, organizational (corporate) carbon footprint must include the direct emissions listed in Scope 1 and Scope 2.
